My Brother, My Rebel, My Artist…My Inspiration | Free Scholarships …

When I was a toddler, I had a brother, who seemed like a misfit to others, but he extended his wings and sheltered me when my parents were not around. He terrorized the streets while riding on his motorcycle and fought anyone who tried to bully him and others. But when he came home, he would rush upstairs with the same ferocity as he rode through the streets, just to quiet my crying and my sister, who had clutched the hem of his shorts.
When I was eight, my brother was acknowledged to become the top designer in the nation; he was offered admission by scouts from Pasadena’s Academy of Art University. A year later, my parents’ company had collapsed. I watched him from the hallway, as he sat in his room; he looked out at the window above for a long period of time, but when he saw me, he picked up his art supplies, packed them into one of the open boxes he was packing, and embraced me for an even longer length of time. After that, he gave his greatest sacrifice for me and worked hard through cheap labor just to provide me with formalized education.
I moved back to California when I was going through my rebellious phase. I fell from a fence and he came to my aid immediately and tended my injury, abandoning his promotion for his excellent attendance record. He never cried when he gave up his passion and yet he deeply mourned for my injury. After that incident, I treasured the scar on my hand as he carefully watched me as I learned to play various instruments and excelled through school. I had became obedient; by choice, and promised to always look forward and set aside my tears.
His last return was over the summer. Just as I walked in the house after coaching at a sports camp, he stood in front of the doorway. He no longer wore torn jeans; instead, he wore a pair of long jeans, which were too thread-bare and worn. He got comfortable as he dismantled his outer attire, revealing two long sleeve undershirts that had holes in various places. Beneath it, outline of various body supports could be seen; let alone his now blotchy skin tone. Too soon, he ensemble all his clothing and walked out into the warm summer air. As he coughs into it, I noticed his failing health; he used to swear at every other word, now â?? he coughs at every half a syllable. If I had the money, he would not need to be like this.
My brother, my parent, my rebel, my artist, my nurse, my audience, my inspiration, he is everything to me. He destroyed his path and perfectly laid out mine with his remains; I still have not found a way to return his ways, but college can change a person, or so I was told. Maybe then, I will finally find the courage to take one step ahead of him, and be everything he was for me.

TJCA Ranking Rises | Catalyst
May 20th, 2012Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy Ranks Among The Top Schools In The Nation
Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy: A Challenge Foundation Academy (TJCA-CFA) ranks 133rd out of 22,000 public high schools in the nation in preparing students for college, according to the Washington Post’s High School Challenge, which was released on May 19.
Last year, the school ranked 196th in the nation.
“I am pleased that our students here in rural Rutherford County have taken on the challenge of the eighteen AP courses we offer at TJCA” said Joe Maimone, the school’s headmaster. “This has led to significant scholarships and college credits earned for our students.”
Only 67 North Carolina high schools are ranked among the top 1,900 in the nation. Out of those 67, only two — Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy and T. C. Roberson High School in Asheville (ranked 1,524th) — are located west of Charlotte.

Chandler artist helps students think in abstract | Portal Berita
May 20th, 2012Students at PLC Arts Academy at Scottsdale gained abstract art skills and more when the school hosted guest instructor Chandler artist Bruce Marion for two weeks.
Marion generated creativity, analytical thinking and enthusiasm with the students as he guided them to create abstract pieces to hang in the school.
“As soon as he starts his presentation, the excitement level in the kids jumps,” said school Principal Chuck Boebinger.
Children created a base painting on which they placed geometric shapes such as ovals, circles and linear elements. They listened to four songs and decided what colors and shapes were inspired by the music, which included “Firebird Suite” by Stravinsky and one of the “Circlesongs” by Bobby McFerrin.
“The base paintings are very abstract, not like a Jackson Pollock, but almost that sort of energy,” Marion said.
Each class at the school, which enrolled 142 students K-4 this year, created a work of art. While some worked with acrylic paints to produce abstracts, others were led in drawing projects by Marion’s wife, Lee Wright.
One benefit of art is that it teaches non-linear thinking, Marion said.
“You’re always problem-solving, but in a way where you’re making a leap that may not seem logical in a one-plus-one-equals-two sense,” he said. “It’s a creative leap that engages the imagination.”
Technology companies, such as Apple, value employees who think outside the box rather than following a narrow path.
“Art is really good at developing those skills,” Marion said.
Someone creating a painting is constantly problem-solving, but there’s no single right answer.
“It engages the brain to look at something from multiple points of view at the same time and to analyze it from many different angles,” he said. “Being an artist entrepreneur, I see that as tremendous value.”
The originators of PLC Arts Academy wanted the school to be called “Fame for little kids.” The original “Fame” school, a high school in New York that focuses on the arts, inspired a movie and television series.
Like that school, Boebinger said the Scottsdale academy’s mission is to open as many avenues for success as possible.
That has happened, said Boebinger, who participates in the fun by playing a variety of music on the guitar, everything from Gershwin’s “Summertime” to Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.”
Among the success stories is a girl who 15 years ago would sing at recess while Boebinger strummed. She went on to perform for the school and was recently accepted into a choral master’s program.
“She wasn’t one of my top academic students, but she found success through music and it kept her on a path,” Boebinger said. “That’s what this school is all about.”
Marion is a graduate of the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif., among the leading art schools in the world. He taught at the Otis Art Institute of Parsons School of Design in Los Angeles and has been a company’s art director as well as an illustrator for high-tech companies, book publishers and game-development firms.
He transitioned to a fine-art career 15 years ago, moved to Arizona 12 years ago and began teaching four years ago. One of his former students from Scottsdale has enrolled at the Chicago Art Institute, among the nation’s top art schools.
“I’ve worked with a number of young people that you know they’re going to be artists,” he said. “They’re super-talented, but I can give them direction and focus.”
As he perused the work at PLC Arts Academy, he discovered some pieces of art he described as gorgeous.
“At 5 or 6 years old, this child already has an amazing sense of color and design, and you can see it on the page. … A lot of us have creativity in us as children that gets suppressed as we get older.”
Parents or teachers too often minimize or criticize and discourage aspirations, telling the child he or she needs to work on “something you can make a living with.” Marion is making a good living at art. He was commissioned to create art for Texas’ Sam Houston State University, a project that involved participation by students at Chandler’s Dale Hancock Elementary School in 2011.
His work hangs at the May Gallery in Scottsdale and the James Ratliff Gallery in Sedona. He also teaches workshops for adults at his Chandler studio, in which participants produce five paintings in two days.
“A lot of (the workshop participants) went into being doctors or lawyers, and all of a sudden they’re experiencing creativity they had when they were children. It’s coming out now when they’re 40, 50 or 60. It’s really a beautiful thing.”
Workshop dates are May 19-20, Aug. 4-5, Sept. 8-9, Nov. 3-4 and Dec. 1-2.

The Skirball Cultural Center seeks an Associate Educator for its teacher programs.
The Associate Educator is a member of the Skirball’s Education department and reports to the Head of School and Teacher Programs. S/he works closely with other school and teacher program staff and a corps of school-tour docents.
This is a full-time, 40-hour/week position with benefits. The Associate Educator schedule is generally Mondays through Fridays, but s/he must be able to work on Saturdays when teacher professional development workshops are occurring.
Responsibilities:
- Create, develop, and implement all museum- and performance-based professional development programs for Pre-K through Grade 12 teachers. Assess teacher programs for relevancy, learning outcomes, and relevance and appeal to audience; revise these programs as needed.
- Serve as a resource for professional development related to visual and performing arts and teaching methodology for Skirball volunteer and staff educators as needed; provide training and develop relevant supplemental materials and instruction to enrich knowledge and enhance tour facilitation and content skills.
- Generate pre-visit materials for teachers whose students are participating in Skirball performing arts programs.
- Engage in outreach efforts to teachers to promote school and teacher programs, including coordinating the teacher e-newsletter, networking with teachers and administrators and related arts organizations, and delivering presentations at school and district meetings.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in education, museum education, art education, or related discipline.
- A keen appreciation of and resonance with the Skirball Cultural Center mission and educational goals.
- Demonstrated skill in developing and implementing teacher programs that yield affective as well as cognitive outcomes.
- Prior experience as a classroom teacher; or related experience demonstrating credibility in training classroom teachers.
- Knowledge of CA state standards in Social Studies, VAPA, and other subjects.

The Skirball Cultural Center is seeking to add a talented Creative Director to its External Affairs team. The right candidate will have the ability to translate content into compelling and inviting visuals, lead the Skirball’s overall creative and design output, and ensure synergy with our integrated marketing communications activities, initiatives and strategies. Our goal is to continue to enhance the institution’s visual presentation across many functions—art direction, photography, film, graphic design, digital, and signage—in order to provide a welcoming experience for every Skirball visitor. The Creative Director reports to the Vice President, External Affairs, and supervises two senior designers and an intern.

The Director of American Indian Collections has administrative responsibility for the curatorial program associated with the diverse American Indian holdings of the Autry National Center. Responsibilities
The Director will serve as the Autry’s lead curatorial representative to the American Indian communities, helping ensure that American Indian voice, sensibilities and concerns are appropriately reflected in Autry curatorial efforts. The Director will represent the Museum in contacts with professional organizations and the academic community. He or she will ensure timely publication of research, development of exhibits, public programs, and special events. This is a full time position.
Qualifications
- Ph.D. in a relevant field from an accredited University, with minimum five years of administrative, curatorial and/or academic experience is expected.
- Demonstrated achievement through publications and exhibit development in relevant areas required.
- Keen understanding of American Indian history and art, contemporary issues and concerns and the role that material culture plays in American Indian life

Responsibilities
The Autry seeks an Assistant Registrar for Loans & Exhibitions within its Collections Management Department. Position reports to the Registrar for Loans and Exhibitions. Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in related field (Museum Studies, History, Anthropology, Conservation or Art/Art History) is required as well as:
- 2-3 years of prior collections management work experience, exhibition work preferred
- Working knowledge of museum registration methods
- The ability to effectively coordinate activities with other departments and outside organizations
- Demonstrated attention to detail and familiarity with art/artifact handling, packing, and shipping

The Autry seeks Program Manager
Responsibilities
In this dynamic role you will be responsible for the research, creation and implementation of a wide range of public programming from lectures and scholarly symposia to Western History workshops to film screenings, festivals and concerts to support the Autry’s exhibitions, permanent collections and the museum’s mission to tell the stories of all the peoples of the American West.

Qualifications

The qualified candidate will have a bachelor’s degree and at least 5 years of experience in a fast-paced rights acquisition position, dealing extensively but not exclusively with visual materials, as well as managerial experience. A very good understanding of intellectual property law, including “fair use” and similar copyright issues, is required. Familiarity with TMS, digital asset management systems, and print and media technologies is preferred.

Corporate/Foundation Relations
